School Ready Project: October 2019

In October 2019, as part of their community service our 12 alumni who were Leadership Academy 10th and 11th grade students returned to our school to teach elementary school children basic math, English, and Khmer writing skills to prepare them for the school year.

Below is the wonderful Leadership Academy’s Manager Chomnan Sok’s letter “Back Home to Give Love to Children” about their work, including quotes from some of our alumni about their experience teaching children:

School break is a great time for students to indulge themselves. Some students hang out with their friends or family, other take short courses or tutorials for the next school year. Like most of students, our 11th grader scholars are taking math, physics, chemistry, biology, and English tutorials for their upcoming school year. However, our 10th graders went back home to run School Ready Project, which is done at Sangkros Cheat Secondary School in order to get primary school students ready for their next school year. In School Ready Project, young learners will be taught English, Khmer, and math.

Before the project start date, 6 10th graders were mentored so that they feel more ready and confident for classes. They all were guided through the whole processes from creating a course outline for each class to preparing teaching aids and activities. From the school vacation onwards, they all have been already in classes to have fun teaching and learning with children at Sangkros Cheat Secondary School.

“I am so glad to see children learn attentively. At the beginning I thought teaching is so difficult, and I cannot do it. However, I am wrong. In fact, teaching children is fun and easy, and I learn and gain new experiences from it. I will do my utmost to teach those children so that they will think learning is fun and valuable”, said Prak Sreylim.

“After teaching children for a while, I think it is easier than what I expected. In the past, I thought teaching is very difficult, but now I realized that it is fun when they all fully participate in all activities. However, I occasionally found it a bit hard because children are sometimes naughty. Anyway, I will try my best to educate and share more knowledge to them”, said Chhorn Chunlin.

“It is my first-time teaching children. I am very happy and excited to see children learning hard. Also, they are courageous to ask and answer very well”, said Yoy Kly.

“I am feeling so happy and excited to see children learning. They pay very close attention to lessons and participate in all activities. Although it is sometimes difficult because children are commonly naughty, I will do my best to educate and help them all learn”, said Korn Sreynai.

“I am very happy to have a chance to teach children in my community. Although sometimes they are playful in the class and don’t pay attention to lessons, I am still glad because I think that it is another way of learning. They are like me when I was in their age”, said Kong Vitha.

“I am so enthusiastic to have fun with children in the class. They all are hardworking, but a little bit naughty sometimes. I am happy the most when the students and me play games to practice their English and math. It is a great experience for me”, said Seang Mean.
